Flash Friday 27!

Flash Friday 27! I've been staring at the beautiful work of Robert McGinnis all weekend and had to try my own feeble homage to it. You can't beat the composition and colors of McGinnis, and I hope I was able to catch just an ounce of that. I've also really been digging the stuff Hard Case Crime has been putting out, which inspired the trade dress at the top.

This one was a little more involved than usual, which is why it's a day late again. I really felt like I needed to try drawing Iris again, as I wasn't happy with last week's portrayal of her.
Here's the traditional artwork before I colored everything and added the text. The Flash himself was rendered mostly with pencil, there's some pen for basic lines in the face, and bordered off with a thick ink line. Just trying to separate him from the rest of the image.

I'm working on doing more washes without the ink linework, and the rest of this one is sort of a transition to that. Very little, basic linework, with the heaviest wash rendering on Iris and the explosion. The shadows on Iris' face turned out too dark for me, so I had to play with it later digitally. Captain Cold and Kid Flash were done with minimal washes and then simple digital shading on a different layer.

I goofed up the lines on the beakers to the left so I ended up having to clean most of those up digitally. All in all this was a lot heavier digitally than I originally intended.

I really enjoyed working on this one, so I'm thinking a few more of these before I hit number 52 will be in order.
