I am of the opinion that in most, if not all, cases selling original sketches that you got from a con on eBay or what have you is a pretty crappy thing to do. That said, today I've made myself a hypocrite. This piece you see above is an inked sketch of Superman and Krypto by Mike Wieringo from 2006, which is now up on the wall above my drafting table. I've made no secret (pretty much since the beginning of this blog) of what a huge fan of Mike's work I am. His work was the first I was really able to tell apart from others when I first got into comics. His blog was the first one I'd found years ago, and like many of you I checked back in regularly to see what his "warm-up" for the day was. His work is still a massive inspiration to me on an almost daily basis, and knowing that I'll never get to meet him remains one of my biggest regrets.
Again, as much as I dislike folks turning around after cons and selling these, I'm really glad I got the opportunity to own this one. I know I talk about the Flash a lot, but there's a lot of Superman stuff hanging around the office too, and you just can't beat Mike's Superman. Knowing Mike's fondness for animals, the fact that Krypto is on this one too is all the sweeter.
So that was my big purchase for the year. Completely worth it.

I've got a head shot of Impulse Mike did for me at a Motor City con eons ago. Still one of my most prized pieces.
Mike wouldn't even hear me out about accepting payment for the sketch. So I took a step to the left and commissioned a Jesse Quick in Flash outfit (it was around the whole Flash #100/Zero Hour, all that fun time)from Chuck Wojtkewicz, who was drawing Justice League America (was it America?) at the time.
That's Ringo for ya, always spreading the love and wealth around.

Doug- The only thing that could be better than a Supes by Mike would be anything Flash related by Mike (at least for me). I'm sure that Impulse headshot is awesome. He was definitely a prince among men.
