Just like last year, here's another drawing of William W. Johnstone's Smoke Jensen for my Dad on his birthday. Pop got me into Johnstone's books, which in turn got me into westerns all over again. Right now, I've only read the Mountain Man series, but I think my Dad has read the whole Johnstone library at this point. Kind of like Cooke's adaptations of the Parker novels, this is a book series I'd really love to adapt, or at the very least do some spot illustrations for. If nothing else, go pick up the first three Mountain Man books, they are great. Johnstone passed away a few years ago, but his daughter Jo stepped up and has been writing a lot of the recent stories, all just as good. Those of you who've been following for a while might remember last year's piece, but I'd like to think this is a little closer to what I was originally going for. This is still not quite finished, but by the time the new scanner comes in it should be all set.
So there you go. Happy Birthday Pop!
2 of these things are not like the others:
HOLY SMOKES! My dad got me into William W. Johnstone when I was in High School. I poured through "Out of the Ashes" series and then on to read "the Mountain Men" and other one shots. Pretty cool. The heroes in Johnstone's books have a take-no-shit attitude. They don't tolerate the lazy and good-for-nothing. They stand up, say the words, then do the thing that needs to be done...damn public opinion.
I think it is really cool that you do this for your Dad! Great work Evan.
Birthday wishes to your Dad!
