Kamandi in Ancient Detroit

I had meant to post yesterday's warmup of Dr. Fate, but hated the way it turned out, so I scrapped it and switched gears for today. Kyle Latino suggested Kamandi, the Last Boy on Earth, yesterday. To prove to Kyle that I do listen to him, and largely because I don't remember having drawn the character before, here's my take on Kamandi.

Granted, I haven't read a whole lot of the books, but Michigan seems to be somewhere between Tiger territory and wild human land. I'm assuming that a lot of the buildings in Detroit are still there in some form or another. I grew up about 2 hours away from Detroit, and one of my favorite things about going into the city was seeing the giant fist memorial for boxer Joe Louis. After getting into comics, it struck me that this giant fist hanging inside a pyramid is one of the most Jack Kirby things I've seen in real life, so I felt it would fit in the world of Kamandi. I tried to stay pretty close to the plan of this area in Detroit, if you look close the street sign is for "Congress". Again, taking liberties with what I know of the stories, I figure either Lake Erie or Lake Huron has since flooded the streets of the city.

This one, like the other sketches, will be available shortly in the shop.

Come back Monday when I'll start Villain Week here at the blog.

2 of these things are not like the others:

The thing that makes this drawing even cooler is your description. Love it man!

This is awesome. I grew up and still live in Detroit. to see it as a post-apocalyptic comic setting really gets me giddy.
