A lot of folks replied with movie scores, podcasts, and instrumental music, just about anything so long as it's not overly distracting. I certainly agree with that sentiment, and listen to a lot of all of the above. I just recently got into podcasts (meaning I just found out they are free) and will use those for work, walking the dog, or doing the dishes. The ones I really dig are Word Balloon, Tall Tale Radio, Sidebar, iFanboy, Tom vs. the Flash, and War Rocket Ajax (for all you comic folk); a lot of the NPR stuff since I never seem to be around when it's on, like Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me, Piano Jazz w/ Marian McPartland, and Thistlepod. So on the slim chance you haven't heard of one of those go give it a listen.
I've mentioned before that I'm a bit of a jazz nut. I originally went to school for music before switching over to the art degree, but I've still got the jazz bug. I figured rather than rattle off a bunch of stuff, I put together an image of 25 albums I think everybody should give at least one listen to. I also did this partially because jazz albums had some of the coolest freaking cover designs then. The image should be big enough to where you can read the titles clearly.
I'm not trying to sell you on jazz, it's certainly not for everyone, just like any other art form. I just feel that most if not all of these albums are an important part of music history, besides being some of my favorites. Admittedly, there are a lot of trumpeters on there because that's what I play and it's what I grew up on. Sometime in high school I went on a wave of picking up every Miles Davis album I could find, even the later stranger stuff. That's just the stuff I like and can also work to, though. You put any lyrics in there and I'm gone. I love Zeppelin and Zappa, but can't work to it at all. That's driving music.
Thanks for putting up with me while I rattle on today, I promise there's drawings coming. In the meanwhile, what kind of stuff do you like to work to?
5 of these things are not like the others:
The Thistle and Shamrock!!! I LOVE that show!
Forgive me if you've heard of this and dismissed them, but if you're getting into podcasts you should really check out The Sound of Young America, Radiolab and This American Life.
Some good stuff you have up here. I've recently been listening to a lot of jazz while I work and I love it.
You've got a nice selection of jazz there. I prefer Lee Morgan's Rumproller to the Sidewinder though. I'm also a little mortified that Louie Armstrong and Chet Baker aren't in the mix. I am glad you threw in some Ellington though. I love me some Ellington.
He's no trumpeter but you should give Jimmy Smith a listen too if you haven't. I too love those Blue Note album covers.
Thanks for the jazz suggestions. I'm a Louie Armstrong fan, myself. Have any recommendations for some jazz trombone? The only one I really know of is J.J. Johnson.
