2011, I hardly knew ye. This year went by blindingly quick but it was memorable none the less. 2011 saw the announcement of my upcoming work with Nate Cosby, Buddy Cops, set to hit the shelves in February with Dark Horse Presents #9. Just a few weeks ago the Jim Henson's The Storyteller anthology from Archaia was released, which included a story written by Paul Tobin and drawn by myself. And of course, at the end of July my wife and I were blessed with the birth of our daughter! The last five months have certainly flown by.

Above is a compilation of some of my favorites from the last year. I appreciate all of you who keep coming back and leaving such kind words. I look forward to sharing more with you in the year to come. Happy New Year!

Marvel Two-In-One!

After the DC Fifty-Too! group's success with remaking the DC Universe it turned it's focus on the Marvel Universe. Above is my entry for one of my favorite series in Marvel's history, Marvel Two-In-One. I say more about my affection for the series, Ben Grimm, Gorilla-Man, and which characters I'd pick in following issues over at the site.

Here's the thumbnail from when I was trying to figure out who exactly I was going team Ben with. The actual size on this is about an inch and a half high. I originally just started drawing a crowd around them, "Doombots in the Savage Land" came later. I knew from the start that GM would use one of Ben's classic lines.Once I decided that it would be Gorilla-Man, I did some sketches of both of them to remind myself how to draw them, and play around with some specific design aspects, mostly small costume details.Thanks for looking!

I had intended to do this as a rough and then draw everything traditionally but I put so much time into it digitally that I just stuck with it. As we get back into our regular rotation, the theme at ye olde Comic Twart this past week was Bucky Barnes, as picked by Mitch Breitweiser. Instead of the usual preview clip, I've posted the whole thing here. I've certainly come around to this character since Brubaker and Epting brought him back as the Winter Soldier a few years ago and his recent resurgence as a mainstay.

The background image is a Jack Kirby Captain America page I found, cleaned up, and colored. I've posted that below. I should note that this is not at all how I would normally color it, this was done completely with design in mind and trying to emphasize Bucky.

Yesterday would have been Jack Kirby's 94th birthday, so I sketched up this tribute to him and the cover of Fantastic Four #82 in celebration. Just got the color on it today. Apologies to Karnak and Gorgon fans for cutting them out in favor of my favorite comics dog, Lockjaw. I've noted before that I'm a big fan of the FF and the Inhumans. Heck, throw Thor and Beast in there and you've got most of my favorite Marvel characters.

The Magic of Shazam! (Fifty-Too)

A while back buddy Jon Morris asked me if I'd be interested in contributing to what became DC Fifty-Too!, where a bunch of us have each picked a book or character from the DC Universe and made up a cover as if we were involved in the upcoming DC Comics relaunch. Surprising no one, I picked Captain Marvel and the world of SHAZAM! When I was designing and drawing it I didn't realize how small some of the elements would be when it was all put together, so I thought I'd post some closer shots here, as well as a little commentary. I'll try to keep it as short as possible.

First, I should explain that if it were up to me I probably would change little or nothing. Cap and company have been so rarely used in the comics recently that I think there's still plenty of room to explore the characters as is. This whole thing is based on the premise that I've been told to change stuff up.

In a perfect world I'd be able to call the book Captain Marvel Adventures, but since I'm pretty sure that will never happen again, I wanted to make sure I did something with the 70's Shazam! logo. The "magic" in the title is important as the book would focus heavily on magic.
I love the "World's Mightiest Mortal" badge that used to be on issues of Captain Marvel Adventures, so I wanted to do something like that. I thought sticking new words for each issue would be fun. A second issue would have said "Mystery! Suspense! High School Girls!". "Giant Robots" is on this one because I think we need more giant robot fights in comics. Speaking of which--
--I would bring back a giant Mister Atom as soon as possible. I took some visual cues from Derek Fridolf's great take on Mister Atom for this. I've gone through all the villains (I mean all of them) and done some redesigning here and there. Everybody except--
--Doctor Thaddeus Bodog Sivana. The guy's a classic so I wouldn't change a thing about him.
I wanted the Wizard Shazam to have a more unique design. There's nothing wrong with the old white/blue robe, but visually there's not much to it. So he's got more layers here and the familiar gold sash tied at the waist. Behind him you can see the Rock of Eternity and it's the same deal: just a few additions while retaining the overall look. And inside the Rock--
--the Great Hall, where the Seven Deadly Enemies of Man are kept. The six legends behind the word "SHAZAM", pictured above Shazam's seat, can also be reached directly here. The mysterious stranger would still be a part of the story.
Billy Batson is still a 12-year old orphan, and the kind of kid who says "Holy Moley!". Again, mostly a visual update.
No matter the title, I still think Cap's name should be on the cover somewhere, if for no other reason than hopefully people will eventually figure out his name isn't Shazam. Plus, I love that logo. Because I don't actually have a good shot of his full costume on the cover itself, I'm re-posting this image I did a couple weeks ago:
Finally, the girl in the bottom right corner is a character who's been around pretty much since the beginning, I've just re-purposed her here. I feel strongly that there needs to be an additional female presence in the book that isn't Billy's sister. I've made her younger for this and I'd probably change up her personality slightly, but her name remains the same. If you know your stuff you can probably figure out who it is, but if not you can always look at the name of the clip below.
Additionally, Mary, Freddy, and Adam wouldn't show up for the first 12 issues if I could help it (you can see my ideas for them here though). Same goes for the rest of the DC Universe. I do have an idea I really like for when the other Marvels show up though, something I might draw for fun eventually.

Hopefully some day I'll get to use some of these, but in the meantime this was a lot of fun to play around with. Thanks for looking!

Cap Explains It All

Nate Cosby, the writer I'm working with on Buddy Cops, has been doing these small quotes from different characters as if he were writing them. After begging him to do one for Cap, he wrote this. Taking a quick break the other night, I thought this would be fun to adapt to a 6-panel comic and practice a little "acting". The end result is the comic above.

Today's my birthday, and my schedule happened to allow me the chance to do just about whatever I wanted. What that means is drink some coffee, flip through a new batch of books, and draw Captain Marvel.

This one's based on what is probably my favorite Captain Marvel-related cover, Whiz Comics #22. I love whenever they have Cap and Billy inexplicably both standing around together, especially considering I think that there might be active volcanoes or forest fires going on behind them.

Alright, back to work tomorrow.

I've always liked it but something about the movie really struck me the other day, and I haven't shaken it since. I took a minute and sketched a small Christopher Reeve Superman last night, the original of which you can see below. Above are some colors I played around with this morning.

In lieu of a sketch today, I've got some designs I was thinking on. Last night after some talk on twitter about which of the Comic Twart guys could/should work on certain books in the big DC relaunch, I scrawled some quick design ideas on my desk for a relaunched Shazam book. Below is a Billy Batson I drew up last night, while above are the revised designs I drew this morning.I tried to keep most of the changes pretty subtle as I don't think there's a whole lot to "fix" on the costume designs. "Mighty Adam" is only seen from the shoulders up because I think he's already got one of the greatest costume designs in comics and would not change a thing. I've got a lot of story ideas to back up the design choices I made here, but I won't unload 'em on you all here. The title is a good example of the kind of thing that sounds great when you're falling asleep. Needless to say, this kind of thing is a lot of fun for me and I hope I get a chance to do this book at some point.

I kind of miss doing Flash Fridays. The Flash is absolutely one of my favorite characters, no matter which one you're talking about. Apparently Barry's stirring up some trouble these days.

And in a little news, I was very glad to hear that Francis Manapul will be both writing and drawing Flash along with Brian Buccellato in DC's big relaunch. Francis is great and I love that DC is giving him a chance to write.

Today's sketch is Mary Marvel! I've said plenty about her before so I'll spare you here. This is based on a great Jack Binder cover for Wow Comics. It's a little different from how I'm used to drawing her but I wanted to try something a little closer to how she's usually portrayed just for the heck of it. Either way I love drawing Mary.

Today's sketch is TINTIN! I've had Tintin on the brain lately, what with these neat posters for the movie that came out a couple days ago, and the new trailer from yesterday. I've seen a lot of folks complaining about it but I'm determined to stay positive about the movie until I've seen it because I really like what I've seen so far. Plus, the caliber of folks working on it is pretty impressive. Anyway, I haven't done a whole lot of Tintin lately so I thought it was about time. After I finish my work on Storyteller I definitely want to put some color on this one.

Today's sketch is THUNDER, the Legion of Superheroes' champion of the power of Shazam. I really like the idea of a Shazam family member in the Legion. Even with the headband and Legion belt (I can't imagine what she'd keep in the pouches) I dig the costume, and I love the references in her real name and home planet. Drawing the old bearded Captain Marvel would have been fun too, I'll have to save that for another day.

Here's today's sketch: Volstagg and son! Bonus points if you know the kid's name. I was taking suggestions from twitter today and got a good number of requests for Volstagg the Voluminous, and I'm more than happy to oblige. Volstagg's my favorite of the Warriors Three, and definitely my favorite supporting character in the Thor books. It's been a while since I'd drawn him though, and man I forgot how much fun it is. Put me down for a Volstagg and Family book someday. It was so cool to see him in the movie, and while I would have liked to see somebody else cast in the part, Ray Stevenson did just fine by me.

Realizing that it's been a long while since I've drawn any women, today's sketch is Wonder Woman! Other than some convention sketches I couldn't tell you the last time I drew her, and strangely enough I remember getting a lot of requests for her during college. I'll be the first to admit that my knowledge of her is pretty limited though.
